Lucha Vavoom

Lucha Vavoom October 2010

For those of you who have not had the pleasure of Lucha Vavoom, please reconsider your plans for Halloween and seriously consider some Luchadores and Buxones to be part of your October this year.  Lucha Vavoom is a mixure of Lucha (Lucha Libre, the masked wrestling made popular in Mexico) and Vavoom (Burlesque strip tease from the days of Vaudville).  Set in the historic Mayan Theater, this is a circus of minis, luchadores & buxoticas where anything can happen.  I have seen mini chickens pit against twins dressed as french maids or a strip tease with pinatas.  It is worth seeing the Mayan, which is one of the historic old movie palaces of Los Angeles.  Offset with wise cracks by Tom Kenny, Dana Gould and Blaine Capatch, as well as any visiting comedian who wants to pipe in, the raucous evening is one that you will tell your friends about & that will make you come back for more SEXO y VIOLENCIA!

Some helpful tips from one in the know

  • If you don’t want to splurge for ringside seats, you have to get there early to grab a spot at the railing right before the VIP section.  The view is just as good, but it fills up FAST.
  • If you can’t get there early, or the best spots are filled, you can sit upstairs in the balcony.  There is plenty of tiered seating & it is a rowdy good time up there.
  • If the main bar downstairs is crowded, head up the stairs, there are bars upstairs in the mezzanine that are never as busy.
  • Hungry?  Upstairs at the bar (or sometimes with the bathroom attendants), you can often score some chips or peanuts – often the chile con limón flavor, just like in Mexico.
