Kakenya Ntaiya and How She Made the Ultimate Sacrifice for Her Education

Be bold. Be the first, so people will follow you.

[dropcap2]W[/dropcap2]hat if you were told at the age of 8 that you would be a wife by the time you were 12 years old? Would you be able to break that cycle? Kakenya Ntaiya shares her true story of changing her life to change her community. “Be bold. Be the first, so people will follow you,” she says. In Kakenya Ntaiya’s TED talk, she shares her story of agreeing to female circumcision in order to go to high school. Ntaiya negotiated with her village elders to convince them to help her go to school in the United States. In return, she founded the Kakenya Center for Excellence, a school for girls in her community that continues to empower girls in her village with an education so that they would not have to make the scarifies that she had made.
