Neutra VDL House

Frank Geary.  Frank Lloyd Wright.  Frank Langella.  If you don’t know which one of these Franks does not belong with the others, this is not the post for you.  However, if you do know that FG & FLW are two of the most influential architects of the 20th century (and still into the 21st century), then here’s another one for you.

Mid Century Modern Wet Dream

We are blessed in the City of Angels to have so many beautiful buildings ranging from Art Deco to Arts & Crafts to Mid Century Modern.  Some of these marvels are even open to the public.  One of my personal favorites is the Neutra VDL research house which has been painstakingly restored & maintained by Cal Poly Pomona.  The architecture students from Cal Poly Pomona conduct tours on most Saturdays.  Check the official website for details.  Occasionally, if you’re lucky, you will catch a tour being lead by a visiting architecture professor who is touring the house with his/her students.  Either way, you will get a glimpse into the legacy of Richard Neutra and learn about the theories he worked on in this remarkable house.

Secret Tip: Make sure you sure you make it to the 3rd floor where you can sit in that special spot to get the ultimate view of the Silverlake Reservoir.
